To mark World Obesity Day (04 March 2024), the OPEN Policy Engagement Network (OPEN) has launched a new White Paper; ‘The need for a strategic, system-wide approach to obesity care’.
The paper outlines results from OPEN’s global Models of Care survey of healthcare professionals and healthcare decision-makers across eight countries, including Australia, Brazil, Canada, Germany, Turkey, Spain, Italy, and Malaysia. The White Paper uncovers current knowledge levels and perceptions of obesity and delves into how this impacts decisions and care delivery.
As a result of findings and recommendations contained in this White Paper, the OPEN Working Group is calling for action to improve policy and practice for the benefit of those living with obesity.
The Models of Care Survey and White Paper were developed with input from healthcare professionals and obesity experts from partner organisations and national networks represented in The Obesity Policy Engagement Network (OPEN). We would like to thank all contributors as well as the organisations who endorsed the White Paper.

This panel discussion explores the results of the Models of Care Survey, highlighting existing gaps and barriers to optimal care and discusses how advocates, policy and decision makers can help to overcome these gaps and deliver a health system response which delivers informed targeted action in obesity and ensures that services to prevent, treat and manage the disease meet the needs of those living with obesity.
Panellists include; Professor John Dixon, Professor Paolo Sbraccia, Vicki Mooney, and Associate Professor Dr. Zubaidah Nor Hanipah. The session was moderated by Professor Brian Oldfield.
